An outfit worn by Bollywood actor Malika Sherawat during a recent function in Chennai has landed her in a controversy. Some of the religious outfits in the southern city say that the attire was improper and has hurt Tamil sentiment. Mallika had performed during the music release of Dasavataram where Jackie Chan, Amitabh Bachan and even Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi were present. And that is probably why the self-proclaimed upholders of Tamil pride suddenly got fired up over performances by filmstars during the function. But police this time seem to have got it right. They have refused to register a complaint saying the dress code cannot be imposed upon anyone and doesn't constitute an offence. But clearly these attacks are a case of finding easy targets. This is not the first time actresses are being targeted over their outfits in Tamil Nadu. Last year southern star Shreya had to apologise for her outfit that she wore during celebrations of Rajnikanth's superhit Sivaji. While puritans continue to gain political mileage there are no protests by the city liberals against them. Is Chennai watching or is it turning conservative when it comes to its women.
